Melinda Gourlay was born in Perth, Western Australia, where she began chamber and orchestral music as a member of the West Australian Youth Orchestra. She was given the opportunity to audition for further education in Germany and England during a tour of Europe with WAYO, and accepted an offer at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She graduated with a first class BMus (Hons), Postgraduate Diploma, and a Masters in Music Performance from the RNCM, where she was supported by the Dorothy Stone Fund.
Melinda has been performing with orchestras and chamber ensembles around the U.K., including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Ulster Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic. She has been a core member of the Eris Ensemble and Size Zero Opera, and has been regularly performing solo works in summer festivals including the Scottish International Cello Festival. She currently works as a casual with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
